Although we know far more now than we did before about the conditions under which individuals are likely to behave unethically, ethical missteps, including the recent Volkswagen scandal, are still prevalent. More research is needed to identify the main strategies groups and organizations can adopt to implement change and test their effectiveness empirically (Kluver, Frazier, & Haidt, 2014; Zhang, Gino, & Bazerman, 2014). This symposium responds to the challenge of advancing our current knowledge of unethical behavior from largely descriptive research to a framework aimed to reduce or even eliminate unethical behavior in organizations. The papers to be presented (1) consider the unintended consequences of existing practices aimed to promote other positive organizational behaviors, (2) develop values-oriented interventions targeted at individuals' mindset and schemas about ethics, and/or (3) structure external environments to reduce propensity to cheat. These papers represent a diverse set of approaches to mitigating unethical behavior, thus providing an extended conceptual and methodological portfolio to inspire future research.
