The role of occupations in the structuring of work is gaining prominence as the role of the organization is receding. With the ongoing emergence and diffusion of digital technologies, many occupations confront innovations which can challenge work practices, task jurisdictions, and identities. While much of the existing literature has considered how such changes can shape inter-occupational interactions (i.e. Barley, 1986), intra-occupational tensions remain undertheorized. Recognizing that occupational groups are not homogeneous entities, we explore how changes to the instrumentation of work are consequential to intra-occupational dynamics. Led by two prominent scholars in this field of inquiry, this symposium brings together papers across a range of occupational settings that explore how local and societal-level technological changes can shape intra-occupational coordination, identities, and knowledge. |
