Animate Content to Enhance Online Learner Engagement
This presentation aims to demonstrate a useful way to convert text-based short case studies to interactive video cases as a way to provide an experiential activity for online learners. I will demonstrate two interactive video cases that have been converted from text using Vyond (formerly GoAnimate) to increase engagement with content and enhance learning in two online HRM and MBA courses.

Introducing The Digital One Minute Paper (DOMP): A Teaching Innovation to Improve Student Engagement
Whilst it is always challenging to gather real-time, actionable feedback from students because of increasingly-large class sizes and a very diverse international student body, to do so has never been more important. It can be difficult to tell what our students are absorbing and whether they understand the key concepts we are trying to teach them. With large classes, there is limited opportunity for one-to-one conversations with students and students are not likely to raise any concerns they may

The Case with a Thousand Faces: Teaching Innovation for the Class that Hasn’t Prepared
This session will share the details of an innovative case teaching technique that fundamentally challenges some of the long-standing assumptions of case teaching. We argue that at least two assumptions underlying traditional case discussion organization are wrong: first, reading long, linear text cases no longer replicates social and cognitive problem acquisition process of real world managers and, second, answering pre-formulated questions does not prepare students for real world complex proble

Lessons from the Corporate 10-K for Management Classes
A rich resource from the business world that the business classroom often does not use to advantage is the 10-K report. For public companies, 10-K reports present corporate strategies and performance results in detail. Yet many students have never seen a 10-K. Bringing the 10-K into the management classroom offers an opportunity to show how management decisions are tied to performance results and, thus, how course content is directly relevant to the practice of management. This session will exam

Adam Smith Cared but Should we, too? Attending to Student Wellbeing and Resilience
Within the higher education setting, health and wellbeing issues have been referred to as the invisible problem (Martin, 2010) and multiple pressures (e.g., financial difficulties, self-image and identity) on students that impact wellbeing have been identified (NUS Scotland, 2010; Universities UK, 2015). The proposed sponsored session aims to provoke a discussion of our role on nurturing student wellbeing. In doing so, it also aims to encourage educators to consider ways of attending to students

Moving from Learning Styles to Learning Style Versatility in order to Improve Classroom Success
This session investigates a central piece of the puzzle to understand learners in business schools in greater depth so that increasing demands of a VUCA world can be met. It introduces the concept of learning style versatility and provides empirical support for its relevance when it comes to better understanding and subsequently optimizing learning outcomes. The ensuing analysis draws a parallel to the field of leadership styles, which at first sought to acknowledge the existence of different st

If Running a Consulting or Service Learning Class Project Is Overwhelming: The Spotlight Project
Management classes (OB, HR, Business and Society, etc.) often involve group projects focused on a practical experience such as consulting or service learning (e.g., Ritter et al, 2018). The learning objectives for such projects are crucial for our students; in particular, the skill development that is needed in management education (Klimoski & Amos, 2012). However, setting up and running these types of action-learning projects can be overwhelming for the professor. This session presents an alter

The Hockey Activity: A Simulation for Teaching Human Resources Planning and Succession Management
Professional sports teams spend considerable time and attention on succession management to ensure that they sign players that are not only highly talented but will fill current or possible gaps in their team lineup. Thus, sports teams are a perfect context for exploring fundamental concepts, techniques, and benefits of human resources planning. In this session, the authors will present a classroom activity that simulates the succession management process for a hockey team. Working in small grou

Management Undergraduates as Apprentices? – Integrating Workplace Learning and University Education
This session will explore the potential benefits and issues of integrating an undergraduate management degree with workplace learning in an apprenticeship-style model. Redesigning Entrepreneurship Education: Cross Cultural Analysis
Entrepreneurship educators provide knowledge and information to university students to help them choose a personal career path that may include entrepreneurship as an option. The purpose of this presentation will be to explain how our findings from research using an expanded entrepreneurial intention model to identify the factors that shape the entrepreneurial attitudes and the intentions of college students can reshape entrepreneurship education to better develop entrepreneurs.

Increasing Student Engagement through the Exchange of Valued Resources
When it comes to contribution within the lecture, the expectations professors have of students is often a bit one-sided and sometimes misunderstood. Drawing on the theory of social exchange (Blau, 1964) the author shares an approach to help increase student contribution within the lecture that operates around trust and reciprocity.

Comparison between G Suite and Portfolium in Strategic Analysis Course
The team-based Capstone Project poses challenges in documenting and assessing individual student learning. Essentially a completed project inevitably obscures individual contributions, level of mastery, and effectiveness as a team player. Therefore, we seek the answers to the following questions: technology-based platform such as ePortfolios and G Suite enable faculty to observe and assess individual student learning via the Capstone Project in the Strategic Analysis course? Given the nature of

Case Writing as a Student Project: A Step-by-Step Method
In this session, we will examine how to use case writing as a pedagogical tool to increase student engagement and learning. Case writing as a student assignment asks students to move from a mostly passive analyst role to take on a variety of roles – researcher, interviewer, writer, and, ultimately, teacher. We will address each component of the student case-writing process including: preparing students for case writing, customizing the assignment to fit class learning objectives, requiring incre

Outside of These Four Walls: Using Out-of-Class Activities to Put Course Concepts into Practice
What could learning look like outside the four walls of your classroom? In this interactive session, participants will consider how an out-of-class component can be positively incorporated into the curriculum design of their course. Participants will gain practical insights for organizing an out-of-class component, so that they can incorporate activities into their own course. Participants should plan to bring a syllabus for one of their courses to reference during the session.
