Using multiple methods enhances the validity of management research by balancing the inherent strengths and weaknesses of different methods. While strategy and organization scholars use a variety of methods, the use of multiple methods to address a research question or set of related questions is rarely discussed explicitly in published work. Our aim in this PDW is to build community and develop knowledge among scholars who are interested in using multiple methods in their research.
This PDW will consist of two components. The first component consists of presentations that will showcase multi-method research within and across published papers and highlight questions related to the challenges and benefits of using multiple methods. The second component will consist of round tables in which participants will be able to have small group discussions with the presenters.
There is limited space in this PDW. To apply, please email the organizer with the following: 1. an approximately 250-word statement explaining how your research will benefit from the PDW; and, 2. a preference ranking of your top three choices for the round table discussions.
The presenters will discuss the following methods, which they have combined in published work: Aversa (simulation, case study); Laureiro-Martinez (lab experiment, fMRI imaging, natural experiment); Liu (formal model, lab experiment); Maciejovsky (formal model, econometric model, lab experiment); Tripsas (econometric model, qualitative interviews).
All participants will be asked to read the following before the PDW:
Turner, Scott F., Laura B. Cardinal, and Richard M. Burton. "Research Design for Mixed Methods A Triangulation-based Framework and Roadmap."Organizational Research Methods (2015). Available here: http://orm.sagepub.com/content/early/2015/11/25/1094428115610808.full.pdf+html
Additional suggested readings (multi-method publications to be discussed by the presenters) will be distributed prior to the workshop. |
