Reviewing is a critical “professional responsibility” and an integral part of participating in the academic community (Trevino, 2008). Yet Tsang and Frey (2007: 129) noted that “there is no formal training for referees who usually pick up their review skills through learning by doing.” This raises a perplexing question for doctoral students and junior faculty: how to develop critical reviewing skills with so few opportunities to practice the art of reviewing? This PDW provides participants with a rare opportunity to learn and practice the art of reviewing. Prior to the conference, participants will be asked to prepare a formal review of an original submission of Andrew Knight’s manuscript, “Mood at the midpoint: Affect and change in exploratory search over time in teams that face a deadline” (Knight, 2015). The actual workshop will consist of two parts: (1) a panel and (2) interactive roundtables. The panel will provide participants an opportunity to gain key insights about the review process and quality reviewing from scholars who have served as Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members at leading journals in our field. In the interactive roundtables, Andrew Knight will provide background information about the original submission of his manuscript. Participants will then break into small groups, each facilitated by an experienced faculty member, to discuss and receive feedback on their formal reviews. Andrew will share the actual reviews of his original submission and how they helped shape the final manuscript. The PDW will conclude with a question and answer period with Andrew.
Pre-registration is required for this workshop. To reserve your spot, please complete the following steps: 1. Send an e-mail to mocreview@gmail.com to request a copy of an original submission of Andrew Knight’s manuscript. 2. Complete a formal review of this manuscript (i.e., one or two single-spaced pages). 3. E-mail your completed review to mocreview@gmail.com. 4. We will email you the registration code for the PDW. 5. Register for the PDW at the AOM program website: https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. The deadline to register online is July 15, 2016.
