The processes, categories, causes and consequences of stigma have received significant attention in recent literature. This Professional Development Workshop (PDW) is aimed at developing a better understanding of stigma and the role that it plays in influencing and even defining identities, organizations, professions and fields. We seek to explain how the existing research has informed our current understanding of stigma within the field of management and identify opportunities for future research. The PDW consists of three components: (1) a presentation of the existing literature that contributes to our understanding of stigma across levels including a keynote address by Bryant Hudson, (2) four thematic round tables, each with at least one well-known scholar to represent a unique but broad topic that bridges the stigma and categories literature. Scholars will help to guide the discussion and develop ideas for future research and close the session with (3) a panel discussion where participants and panelists will share the most promising avenues for collaboration and future directions. Participants will be asked to pre-register for the PDW and will be asked to select and sign up for one thematic round table: (1) Origins and audience assignments of stigma; (2) Stigma management: Ownership, contradiction, compromise, (3) Reconceptualizing outcomes: Labels, categories and discourse, (4) Capturing stigma and accessing stigmatized populations. Each round table will last 45 minutes and a maximum of 12 participants per table will be allowed.
Pre-registration is required for this workshop. To register online, please visit https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. Please contact the workshop organizer at whelms@brocku.ca to obtain the approval code. The deadline to register online is August 06, 2016.
