This PDW features members of the Grammy-nominated, self-conducted classical music group, A Far Cry, as a musical metaphor for shared leadership. Such a conductor-less model is an emerging trend among entrepreneurial classical music groups, as it encourages a stimulating energy that is specific to spontaneous, ongoing shared dynamics. This resonates with, and has important implications for, our field’s persistent calls to move away from the narrow definitions of leadership as a collection of individual attributes and behaviors toward what emerges across actors at the constant interface of actions and interactions. The goal of this PDW is to shed light on these emergent properties as important building blocks of shared leadership without being constrained by the assumption that there must exist clearly-defined and/or fixed sets of leaders and followers in any leadership process. Given the prevalence of horizontal structures and collaborative dynamics today, and particularly the expansion of crowd-based forms and practices (e.g., user- and open innovation), the time may be ripe for us to revive the study of shared leadership, through which we can better explain our increasingly distributed organizational/social life and bring back theoretical rigor to the leadership literature. To that end, we take the innovative approach of weaving together music, theory, and practice in this session. The program includes A Far Cry’s live music performance and demonstration of rehearsal tactics, and the invited scholars’ academic presentations and impromptu musical engagement, all in the spirit of exploring the sound of leadership in shared dynamics, both literally and figuratively. |
