In line with the conference theme “Improving Lives”, this PDW seeks to bring together members of the “Virtue Ethics in Business” community of scholars and other interested parties to share experiences and to strategize on how to apply virtue ethics as person-oriented ethics on individual and collective level in order to improve live through better management and business practice. The virtue ethics perspective is especially compatible with the assumption that business management should contribute to improving lives as it is premised on the belief that individual human excellence (areté, the Greek word for “virtue”, meaning “excellence”) goes hand in hand with the excellence of institutions (including firms) and of society as a whole (Moore & Beadle, 2006). However, one might wonder how a person-centered approach can contribute to ethics on an organizational level. This aspect and its implications for business ethics education and research are addressed in this workshop. The workshop begins with a short keynote briefly introducing the core ideas of virtue ethics and highlighting the core challenges of applying virtue ethics in the fields of the individual manager, of strategic management, on organizational level and in management education. This is followed by four inputs by scholars who then lead the interactive table discussions along these four fields. The workshop ends with the development of a vision to take the community forward through concrete projects such as grants and special issues.
