Introduction by Robert Ford, University of Central Florida. He will also review a brief history of CASS and how it can benefit senior members of the Academy. Encore Careers: An Emerging Trend by Jim Emerman, Vice President, Encore.org. Jim will briefly discuss the history and purpose of Encore.org and what is known about the emerging trend of encore careers. He will detail research on: (a) how continued work and social engagement through encore careers enhances the individual’s cognitive function and longevity and (b) the role that encore talent can play in contributing to society by solving broader social problems. Mid- and Late-Career Renewal by Ariane Froidevaux, University of Florida. Ariane will review research on mid- and late- career issues and propose new directions for research on career renewal and reinvention. She will discuss the psychological and physiological benefits of encore careers and present a new model which can be used as a starting point for much needed research on work after retirement as it explains how mid- and late-career renewal can be a bridge for employment and encore careers. Entrepreneurship as an Option for Encore Careers by Jerome (Jerry) Katz, St. Louis. Jerry will identify the paths, prerequisites (personality and resources) and the preparation required of those who seek to be successful as an entrepreneur in a second or encore career. He will give special focus on how AOM and CASS (Community of Academy Senior Scholars) members can engage in an entrepreneurial path and the advantages and disadvantages of entrepreneurship as a possible next stage of an academic career. Head and Heart Issues to Consider in Planning “what’s next” by Larry Gard, President, Hamilton Chase Consulting. Larry will discuss the cognitive and emotional factors that make it challenging for individuals to answer the “what’s next?” question when contemplating retirement. This presentation will address obstacles that impede planning and discuss strategies designed to help people discern what future activities will be meaningful and satisfying. Summary, wrap up, and general discussion of possible research topics by Sherry E. Sullivan, Bowling Green University. Sherry, as a former chair of the Careers Division and researcher who has studied careers, changing career paths, and retirement, will identify common themes from the presentations and how these themes may serve as a foundation for further study on late career issues. |
