Case research methodology (CRM) has been utilized for both development of journal articles as well as pedagogical cases. During the last two decades CRM has become a more accepted research methodology for publication of journal articles over a wider range of disciplines. Previous perspectives have included charges of case research as “simply” story-telling. However, today CRM is more broadly accepted as mainstream methodological approach. The acceptance of pedagogical cases as valid research by the AACSB has given encouragement to this research stream that provides research benefits as well as a basis for teaching future organizational leaders. The greater legitimacy of CRM has ushered in a case research boom as evidenced by the exponential growth of professional case research activities and organizations as well as peer-reviewed publication outlets. This PDW session is designed to provide an opportunity to hear from a distinguished panel of case research scholars, journal editors, educators and administrators offering their unique and divergent perspectives on how case research provides multiple avenues of impact and contribution. The panel presentation will be followed by interactive round-table discussions and dialogue. Each round-table will be led by one or two of the panelists. The PDW will conclude with discussion among the round-tables regarding future directions for advancing case research and creating mentoring partnership clusters to assist young case research scholars be successful in their case teaching and research endeavors.
This PDW proposes to bring together a panel of several experts who have a diversity of experience with CRM. The panel includes two panelists who have a distinguished record of making contributions to the advancement of case research through publications in top-tier refereed journals, four who serve as journal editors, four deans or administrators who promote the importance and impact of case research, and at least one publisher.
