STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) students and professionals often fail to persist and progress in STEM careers and training programs—disproportionately women, minorities, and the underprivileged—resulting in one of the most complex and enduring problems in the study of careers: the leaky STEM pipeline. The leaky pipeline problem straddles multiple disciplines: career development, applied psychology, gender, diversity, retention, and turnover. Accordingly, this PDW assembles a multidisciplinary panel of scholars and practitioners with expertise in the various domains pertinent to the leaky pipeline problem. The PDW has two parts: (1) a panel discussion among the panelists on the future of research on the STEM pipeline —audience questions will also be invited; and (2) smaller roundtable sessions in which attendees can engage both with each other and with the panelists in small group discussions. This PDW provides an opportunity to incubate research on STEM career development, and a platform to discuss and deliberate critical issues on the leaky STEM pipeline—all towards forging a research agenda for and evidence-based solutions to a complex, multifaceted problem.
Pre-registration is required for this session. To register online, please visit https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. The deadline to register online is August 9, 2018.
