Debating current events is a useful tool to engage students in research and analysis, perspective taking, critical thinking, and presenting and defending their opinions. There are many different ways to utilize debates in business classrooms, but this pedagogical approach can feel overwhelming to even seasoned faculty who necessarily give up some control over the conversation. This PDW presents a panel of faculty members who use classroom debates in organizational behavior, ethics, and organizational theory courses to share best practices and discuss how they use debates in a variety of different courses. Through a mock debate and an interactive Q&A session, participants will learn different ways to integrate debates into their classrooms, large and small. Following this introduction, participants will choose to work in a small group to develop an outline for a specific debate topic that will be shared with all PDW attendees. Participants will leave the session with tools for utilizing debates in their classroom and outlines for debates on several current event topics including: Uber’s bro’ culture, the #MeToo movement, globalism vs. protectionism, diversity at Google, American football players’ social justice protests, and more.
