Incorporating doctors into leadership roles has become an important, although contested, attempt to deal with the increasingly 'wicked' problems having healthcare systems worldwide. This process has significant implications for the identity for doctors and for their professional practice. In this panel symposium, we have brought together leading academics and practitioners in the field of medical leadership from four countries to explore these problems, the process of re-professionalization, and how best to conceive of and develop medical leaders.
