The steam engine in the 18th century and railroads in the 19th century dramatically transformed economies and societies. Today digital transformation promises to have an equal or deeper and more pervasive impact due to the combined effect of several digital technologies including IoT, 5G, cloud, blockchain, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. However, there are many, and often even competing, views on the extent and scope of such impact and little few systematic and rigorous research. A key question only partially addressed in the strategy and in the innovation and technology management literature is: What core assumptions and relationships in the extant research are no longer valid in a world transformed by digital technologies? The purpose of this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) is to bring together a set of leading scholars to address this question and review two important areas –i.e. the digital transformation of institutions and strategy and digital transformation of business models, capabilities and innovation. Presentations by the panellists will be followed by an open discussion and the PDW will end with the development of a research agenda by clustering the insights that emerged from the workshop.
Pre-registration is required for this session. To register online, please visit https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. Please contact the workshop organizer g.solinas@lmu.de to obtain the approval code. The deadline to register online is August 9, 2018.
