People have connections at multiple levels of action that impact their well-being and their ability to achieve desired outcomes, individually and collectively. In particular, the quality of these connections impact their ability to engage successfully in multi-level systems change. This workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners to explore the complex relational dynamics of multi-level systems change, taking into account embedded levels of change from the microdynamics of intra and interpersonal change, to the meso-dynamics of cross-functional and organizational change, to the macrodynamics of cross-organizational, community and institutional change. We will break into working groups to explore the distinct levels at which change occurs, then meet across these groups to articulate how change at one level enables or constrains change at another level. Overall we will gain insights into the relational dynamics operating at multiple levels among multiple stakeholders who hold differential power, and how these create possibilities and challenges for positive change. The workshop is organized by a pair of scholars - Gittell and Stephens - who are members of the Positive Organizational Scholarship, Positive Relationships at Work, and Relational Coordination Research Collaborative research communities and who engage regularly with practitioners to understand the relational drivers of organizational and social change. In this workshop they will be joined by 15 co-organizers from diverse nationalities, epistemologies and identities, with expertise regarding diverse levels of analysis and action. |
Our proposed format will enable participants to separate into working groups to explore multi-level systems change from the perspective of a particular level, then enable them to meet across levels. The primary benefit of this format is to enable scholars and practitioners to build bridges across levels of analysis and action in order to strengthen the scholarly and practical impact of their own work. |
