Physicians often have primarily clinical roles; every medical school admissions essay contains some version of “I want to help those who are sick or injured.” However, the continued advancement of medicine requires that some physicians also assume the dual role of physician scientist, developing new medical innovations and learning to juggle both clinical and research responsibilities. Nevertheless, this path is not an easy one, and physician scientists often find themselves frustrated, feeling that fulfilling both roles as a clinician and a researcher may not be viable career path. A number of physicians also find themselves in managerial roles – either by choice or necessity. There is a growing body of literature describing the development of high quality physician managers, but there is less known about how physicians managers themselves understand their dual roles. The success of academic medical centers is often dependent on their leaders’ ability to develop physician scientists and physician managers. However, the organizational qualities necessary to do so are sometimes vague and ill-defined. Additionally, physicians need to feel as though they are supported and able to thrive in their dual roles, which aligns well with the 2019 theme of “Understanding the Inclusive Organization.” Therefore, the purpose of this panel symposium is to create a formal, moderated, and interactive dialogue between panelists in order to (1) define the environmental factors that are likely to foster or inhibit success for physician scientists and physician managers and (2) describe how physicians themselves juggle these dual roles.
