This PDW is linked to Journal of Organizational Behavior Special issue on “Presenteeism at Work: Developments and Avenues for Future Research”. Presenteeism refers to going to work despite ill health that might otherwise warrant sickness absence. Estimated to cost tens of millions of dollars in lost productivity, the concept has attracted the attention of different academic disciplines, policy- makers, and practitioners interested in mitigating the problem. Despite the financial costs and academic interest, progress in understanding presenteeism has been slow, as the available research has been plagued by three conceptual problems, each of which follows from the others. First, there is no agreed upon definition of presenteeism. Though some progress has been made in this regard, presenteeism is primarily viewed as a sickness construct. Second, and reflecting this definitional uncertainty, presenteeism is conceptualized as if it were a unitary construct, when it is actually an aggregate construct. Third, the incorrect specification of the presenteeism construct has made it difficult to obtain cumulative knowledge through building a relevant nomological network. This PDW therefore, aims to bring together researchers/academics in order to provide solutions and place special emphasis on developing a future research agenda that will address these problems. In addition, the PDW is linked to Journal of Organizational Behavior Special issue on “Presenteeism at Work: Developments and Avenues for Future Research”. The PDW consists of three components: (1) a brief introduction that defines the topic and provides an overview of recent work on it, (2) thematic round tables, each facilitated by two well-known scholars. The round tables will focus upon “challenges” that researchers are experiencing in positioning, conceptualizing, and publishing their work to focus the discussion. The PDW will be opened for all participants however those participants who wish to discuss their research project/idea for the special issue will be asked to pre- register for the PDW. Pre-registered participants will submit a short (1-2 page) document with an abstract of a research project and a challenge statement that outlines which issue(s) they would like to discuss in the round table session. Each round table will last 40 minutes’, and registered participants will be given a preference. Finally, there will be (3) a panel where the JOB guest editors of the special issue – Sir Cary Cooper, Charmi Patel, Pawan Budhwar and Michal Biron –will focus on gaps, questions, and phenomena they view to be most in need of addressing. After sharing their high-level views, they will answer questions about these issues and the SI in a Q&A format.
