This workshop explores the challenges and opportunities inherent to doing research in emotionally laden contexts. Emotions are inescapable field phenomena: they are as ubiquitous as the individuals who populate our field sites. In some cases, however, emotions (our informants’ and our own) are especially salient – so salient, in fact, that they become central in our observations, our conversations, and our theorizing. How can we make sense of what we and others feel as we gather data in emotionally laden contexts? How can we faithfully code for emotions? How can we generate theories that adequately reflect the degree to which emotions affect organizational processes and outcomes? Most guides to field research provide little counsel on these matters. Through a format that includes panel presentations by experts, open dialogue, and roundtable discussions, this PDW seeks to provide guidance to researchers currently or soon to be immersed in emotionally laden field sites. This is the second PDW in a series that started in 2015. Our hope is to build an on-going forum, and provide a space and time for the field research community to come together and discuss emotions in management research.
