The realms of civil society, markets, and the state are inherently entangled – offering both interesting and important implications and opportunities for management research. To explore these interactions, we are convening a diverse array of scholars for an interactive professional development workshop, bridging the research domains of social movement theory, stakeholder theory, non-market strategy, and organizational theory. Our goal is to further the inter-disciplinary discussion started at the 2015 Academy Meeting as we continue to build a community of scholars interested in the interactions of social movements and firms within their broader environmental contexts.
The PDW will consist of three segments. In the first, we will hear a series of five minute research sketches highlighting the latest ongoing research at the intersection of social movements, stakeholders, and non-market strategy. Afterwards, a panel of senior scholars will offer their insight into opportunities for furthering research in this space - followed by a question and answer session. In the second segment, we will take some time to network - allowing participants to make connections among themselves and with the PDW's speakers, presenters, and discussants. The final segment will feature research round-tables, where participants will receive feedback from leading scholars, and fellow participants, on new research ideas or issues faced with current projects.
Our goal is that participants leave the PDW with ideas for improving their research projects, connections to other scholars with similar interests, and resources for further exploring the various theoretical approaches to investigating social movements and markets.
Participation is open for the research presentations/speaker panel and the networking event. Pre- registration is required for the research round-table segment. To apply for the round-table, please submit a 1-2 pg description of your research idea to Jocelyn Leitzinger and Brayden King at MovementsandMarkets@gmail.com by July 1. At the beginning of your submission, please include your name, title, and school affiliation, and list your top three table preferences. To ensure enough discussion time for each participant, there will be a limited number of positions available.
